This is a set of LCARS PADD-style user interface modifications for Nokia's Internet Tablet OS, consisting of four themes, replacement sound effects, and some other extras.

For ITOS2008 (chinook or diablo):

For ITOS2006 or ITOS2007:

If you'd like to modify our packages:

[edit] Release notes

[edit] Steps you should take after installing

  1. Set the theme (Home menu -> Set theme)
  2. Set the background (Home menu -> Set background image)
  3. Reboot your device to reload sounds, icons, and other graphics

[edit] Removing themes

  1. Do not uninstall a theme while it is the currently selected theme (this applies to any theme; see maemo bug #2903 for more information).
  2. When removing LCARS packages using the Application Manager, the lcars-complete package must be uninstalled first. After it is removed, you will be able to remove any or all of the other packages which were installed.

[edit] Packages installed by lcars-complete

  • hildon-theme-lcars-padd - Original LCARS theme, based on various PADDs
  • hildon-theme-lcars-bridge - Yellow theme, based on NCC-1701-D bridge controls
  • hildon-theme-lcars-modern - Blue theme, based on latest LCARS seen on NCC-1701-E
  • hildon-theme-okuda - Blue and green theme, based on 23rd-century UIs.
  • lcars-sounds - System sound effects (uses dpkg-divert)
  • lcars-extas - Startup graphics and other unthemeable bits (uses dpkg-divert)
  • search-memory-alpha - Desktop search plugin for memory-alpha.org/en/

The non-theme packages will remain in effect regardless of which theme is in use. You can uninstall these packages while keeping the theme(s) installed, but the Hildon Application Manager requires you to first remove the lcars-complete package which depends upon everything else.

Most of the icons are now controlled by the system's theme setting instead of being diverted, but you must reboot after switching themes for all of the changes to take effect (maemo bug #3659).

[edit] Known issues

  • Maemo bug #3737: Installing lcars-complete takes a while (sometimes over two minutes) because of hildon-theme-cacher (and, to a lesser extent, gtk-update-icon-cache)
  • Text colors in certain apps are beyond our control. Places with unreadable text:

(feel free to edit this list if you find anything else)

    • Maemo bug #1716: The text color in the built-in Internet Chat program needs to be configured (Instant messaging -> Tools -> Settings) because it defaults to black
    • Entries in the GPE Calendar are white text on pale yellow. Their default under Adria was black text on mid-yellow. (is this fixed?)
    • Maemo bug #3678: The list of feeds in the RSS reader is black-on-black (the selected item is readable, but everything else in the list isn't). This will be fixed in a future update to the RSS reader.
    • Maemo bug #3503: After the last OS upgrade (diablo), the Application Manager has black on black text in the list of packages. The selected item is readable but the rest of the list is not. This will be fixed in a future update to the Application manager.
    • Close button for side panel in Evince PDF viewer is invisible (until clicked - you have to already know it's there...)
    • In Eboard the chess board and console 'selection fields' at right part of screen are invisible.
  • While using the LCARS themes you should not rearrange your Task Navigator (left side) buttons such that the topmost button is something other than the web button, because the LCARS text label will remain in that location (under whatever you put there) and the web button will be without a label or icon. The web button's icon is actually blank (and the LCARS label is on the button's background) because the icon is not positioned low enough to get the text where we want it.

[edit] Acknowledgments

  • Many thanks to Mike Okuda, who's work inspired these themes. (We are not affiliated with Mr. Okuda, CBS, Paramount Pictures, or Viacom in any way.)
  • We appreciated the examples at the LCARS Standards Development Board. Their flash LCARS site is worth a look, and works nicely on internet tablets.
